It's not uncommon to see non-profits asking for donations. That's simply how they operate. But ASE isn't just a non-profit. We're a school. And more than that, we're focused on creating a beacon within each community we serve that will represent a strong, positive change that can improve the lives of the people outside of our walls as much as it changes the students within them.
That's a pretty big mission and we aren't afraid to admit we could use your help.
African School for Excellence relies on full and part time staff, volunteers, donors, members of the community, and so many more to do what we do. If you'd like to be a part of the change we're making and help change the fortunes of a generation and the generations that will follow, here are some ways you can get involved.
Sponsorships: Sponsoring a child, a class, or one of our Student Led Initiatives programmes is a great way to get involved. Learn more about sponsorships by contacting us.
Volunteer: Time matters just as much as money. Learn about how you can make a difference by donating your time to our scholars. Contact us to find out more.
Partner with us: Learn about the creative ways businesses and members of the community are partnering with us and see if there's a way we can work together.
Work with us: We're always on the lookout for people to join our team. Learn about the types of roles available at ASE by contacting us.
Thank you for considering a donation to African School for Excellence. ASE works in association with Give and Gain and Kindful to ensure that your donation is safe. Donations from South African and US residents are fully tax-deductible. Currently, donations made outside of South Africa and the US are not tax-deductible, but we are working hard to change this.
For R19,620.00 per annum, you can get to know an ASE scholar. You'll be able to communicate with them via email and track their progress while hearing about their life at ASE, as wells as outside of the classroom. Donors have the option to sponsor the same scholar from year to year. If desired, anonymous donations are also possible.
African School for Excellence aims to be as transparent as possible in the use of our funds, particularly with funds that are donated. Donations to ASE typically go towards subsidizing the cost of education, which enables our students to attend by minimizing their parents’ share of the cost. Donations and subsidies pay for two-thirds of the cost of education for each student. This is a key part of our mission: to make high quality education affordable to everyone in South Africa. The cost for our scholars to attend ASE is about R10500 per student, per year. ASE's education costs are broken into four categories: Non-sponsorship donations further reduce costs in these areas to ensure that tuition rates remain affordable. Learn how ASE's innovative model keeps costs low and makes education more affordable for South Africans. We believe in transparency. Below you'll find the information necessary to verify our registration information. African School for Excellence is a registered Public Benefit Organization (PBO) in South Africa (Ref # 930040741) and a registered 501(c)3 US organization (Federal Tax ID # 27-4892867).
In South Africa and the United States your contribution is tax-deductible. While that isn't always the case in other parts of the world, we're also working to make charitable donations tax-deductible in other countries.

The African School for Excellence Model focuses on two specific pain-points of the African education system: the quality of education provided and the cost of providing high-quality education. Our unique model takes a structured approach to tackling both of these challenges while taking into account the fact that any successful model must also be scalable. Without solving both of these problems simultaneously, a good education will only be available to a fraction of the population and will limit the enormous latent potential of talented individuals who have the abilities to transform their communities and, indeed, the country and continent.
What does learning look like using the ASE Model?
- Peer-based Learning. All ASE lessons feature peer-based learning,
strategically set in the scholars’ Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD).
Developmental psychology research has revealed
that the best learning occurs just ahead of development, when challenges
are too difficult to be comfortable, but not so difficult as to cause the
scholar to give up. By working in teams on work too difficult for any one
individual, scholars build on one another’s knowledge and simultaneously
develop creative problem solving, analytical reasoning, and leadership skills.
- High-quality Instruction. The quality of a school cannot exceed the quality of its teachers . ASE makes sure that each scholar receives quality instruction from a highly trained teacher in every lesson, using a thorough, professionally developed and locally tested lesson plan. Careful utilisation of all teacher time allows to maximise its most valuable resource: the expert teacher.
- Independent Practice. Daily independent practice serves three important functions. First, “deliberate practice”, in which the scholar works at the edge of his or her ability and receives frequent, immediate feedback, has been proven to drastically increase learning speed when compared to traditional instruction . Second, scholars learn to work independently and reach mastery on their own, preparing them for university and beyond. Scholars can develop a love of reading, and a love for creative, independent pursuits. Third, scholars gain valuable computer skills integrated into the learning of other subjects.

The ASE Model was designed specifically to address the needs and challenges of African secondary school scholars. The children are eager to learn but barriers such as school funding and tuition costs keep many of them from reaching their full potential. ASE is tearing down those barriers.
To do this, we focus our mission on three essential factors:
- World-Class Quality. Everything begins with our commitment to excellence. We know that township scholars can compete with the world’s best students. We expect ASE scholars to graduate ready to succeed at the very best universities, both in South Africa and abroad, and we accept nothing less.
- Affordable Sustainability. We understand that even the highest-quality educational model will not be enough to change the state of education in South African townships. ASE’s refined model costs roughly 60% of the current public education spending per learner, which expand the possibilities and opportunities to improve the state of education in South Africa.
- Scalability. South Africa is filled with talented young people who can achieve world-class results if given the opportunity. Through our financial model, our systems, and our embedded teacher’s college, we maintain a ceaseless focus on scale. We seek to develop a network of 200 schools throughout the country, providing elite education to tens of thousands of disadvantaged scholars every year.
We offer high school full-time education using an inquiry-based approach. Our students take the Cambridge international exams CIE upon exit.
